OVERVIEW

In 2021, traffic fatalities hit a 16-year high, signaling a major need for change on U.S. roadways (NHTSA). To combat this, many communities have taken to concepts like Vision Zero and other safety action plans in recent years, but achieving zero roadway deaths requires a complete change in mindset.

Enter the Safe System Approach. Instead of trying to prevent all crashes, the holistic approach focuses on eliminating fatal and serious injuries — all by anticipating human mistakes and accommodating our vulnerabilities. The framework’s six leading principles and elements place human safety as the priority, ensuring that when mistakes inevitably occur, the severity of their impact is minimal. And now, the approach has started to gain traction in the U.S. as a guide to traffic safety planning — and leading solution to the roadway safety crisis.

In our upcoming webinar — Reframing Roadways: The Power of the Safe System Approach — the Federal Highway Administration's Senior Safety & Geometric Design Engineer, Mark Doctor, will delve into the Safe System Approach, touching on:

  • Why the Safe System Approach
  • How the Safe System Approach is changing transportation
  • Why the Safe System Approach prioritizes safety over efficiency
  • Common challenges of implementing the Safe System Approach

Register below to join us on Thursday, March 21st at 10:00 a.m. CDT for a 60-minute, in-depth introduction to the Safe System Approach — plus, we'll save time at the end to answer your questions.
