1) Blow area clean of any debris with compressed air, or sweep thoroughly with a stiff broom.

2) Select area to be covered with the Tactile Guidance System Mat. Fill in any seams and cracks with adhesive. This will prevent water from flowing underneath the pads.

3) Apply 3M™ 2" Gray Masking tape, to border the areas to be covered, about 1/8" beyond the sides of the pads. This will ensure that adhesive covers the entire surface underneath the pad and allows for feathering the adhesive edges. Mark the masking tape to show where the corners of the pad are placed.

4) Apply adhesive to masked curb ramp surface, ensuring that all surface irregularities (pits and cracks) are filled in with adhesive. If you do not have a large caulking gun, the adhesive tubes can be cut through completely at one end. Then squeeze out over the masked off area. Roll up the bottom of the tube as you would a toothpaste tube. Some applicators find that twisting the tube is also effective. One tube is good for approximately 5 square feet (one 2 by 2 pad). If you are applying directly from the tubes, cover the adhesive tube’s open end between uses. Once opened, it is best if the adhesive tube is used up within 15- 20 minutes. Cover the end of the adhesive tube with a plastic bag. If you are using a caulking gun, release the pressure and plug the end between uses.

5) Use the trowel to distribute the adhesive over the area. Finish adhesive application with the smooth side of the trowel to ensure an even surface. When all pads are in position, press down with the tamping cart and then roll the edges with the 1" roller. If you do not have a tamping cart, a wooden dowel can be used to press down between the domes. This can be followed by standing on a 3/4" plywood section that is placed on the domed area. In all cases be careful about adhesive getting on the press-down devices as it can easily transfer to the mats. Paper towels can be used as a buffer between mat and devices.

6) Using the disposable gloves, carefully “feather” the adhesive and seal the edges. Pay particular attention to the edges to ensure they are fully flush with the ramp surface. Wipe the surface of the pad with paper towel to remove excess adhesive that appears. If you have edges that still won’t stay down, use a brick to hold down the edge until the adhesive sets.

7) Cordon off the area with cones (and optional cone webbing reels) for an hour to keep pedestrians out while allowing the adhesive to set.

TAPCO’s Cone Signs can be used to redirect pedestrian traffic if necessary.

The in-ground pedestrian pad detector has been developed to direct response to the Traffic management Industry's demand for reliable in-ground detection. The pedestrian pad detector shall interface to all traffic control equipment through the standard NEMA type inductive loop detector equipped with delay timing capabilities. The use of load cells or mechanical switches shall not be permitted. The pedestrian pad detector shall require no direct action by the pedestrian other than the presence of the pedestrian on the detector pad. The in-ground pedestrian pad detector shall employ a preformed loop and a stainless steel bending plate to provide reliable detection when a weight of 33 lbs is present on the line detector pad. The entire pedestrian pad detector shall be housed in a stainless steel, reinforced frame. The dimension of the frame shall be 35.4" long, by 23.6" wide, with a depth of 3.94". The total weight of the assembly shall be 55 lbs.. The frame assembly shall have mounting tabs, located on the base of the unit, to allow the unit to be anchored in place within an existing curb ramp. The detector frame may be installed in a new concrete pour. The detector assembly shall be provided wit the loop feeder cable from the manufacturer to connect to the detector lead- in cable and of the required length to provide for the intended operation. It shall be possible to remove the detector pad matting for replacement without disconnecting any wiring.

The durable matting shall be manufactured from 100% recyclable material. The tactile surface shall be colored yellow (unless otherwise specified) for easy of identification by the pedestrian. The surface shall be compliant with the ADA requirements for size and spacing of the tactile dots.

Features:

  • Based on inductive technology, Ped-X-Pad connects directly to all standard loop-detectors and controllers.
  • Innovative design allows simple, one person installation and no messy sealants.
  • Constructed from robust laser-cut stainless steel combined with durable UPDM in fill-matting.
  • Tested in accordance with UKHA Type Approval TR2130b.
  • Multiple units can be connected in series or parallel.

Functions:

Detects pedestrians, bicycles, roller blades, horses, etc.

  • Cancels Ped Calls - if pedestrian leaves detection zone prior to “Cross” phase.
  • Makes Ped Calls - as an alternative to a “Call-Button”.
  • Greatly improves traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
  • Improves pedestrian and driver behavior.
