ALIGNMENT:
To install round and V-channel posts, position the point of the radiating
fins so it points parallel to
the road, with the point of the fins toward oncoming traffic (Figure
1). For installation of square posts, position the point of the radiating
fins toward oncoming traffic,
but at a 45-degree angle (1/8 turn) away from the road (Figure
2). This alignment maximizes the reusability after crashes, saving
you the time and cost of reinstallation.
FOR
INSTALLATION INTO DIRT:
Use of a V-Loc drive cap is recommended to prevent mushrooming of the
angle iron and fin, making installation of the wedge difficult. Manual
and power drive caps are available. The V- Loc can also be installed using
a wood block and maul. To prevent damage to the welds, do not pound
directly on the welded fin. Drive the V-LOC straight down until the
bottom of the fin is approximately 4 inches above the ground. Use a level
to make sure the angle iron is plumb from both directions. Then drive
the V -LOC down until it is flush with or slightly below the ground surface.
Remove or compact the dirt inside the socket to allow post to be inserted
10 inches. Insert post into socket.
FOR INSTALLATION INTO ASPHALT AND CONCRETE:
Make a hole 6 to 7 inches in diameter. Drive the V-LOC into the earth
below the slab until it is flush with the surface. A drive cap is recommended
(see previous paragraph). Insert post or pole (see alignment) and wedge.
Plumb the post or pole and fill the hole around the exterior of the socket
with new asphalt or road repair material. Do NOT place this material inside
the socket where the post and wedge are placed. For concrete, installation
is recommended at the time of initial pouring. See alignment instructions.
Ask about the new V -LOC system for concrete.
WEDGE INSERTION:
Insert wedge (Figure
3) with side hole closest to the top so that the wedge puller can
properly grasp the wedge if removal becomes necessary. Start the wedge
in at an angle (Figure
4). Drive the wedge in so it is level with the top of the V-LOC or
up to 1 inch below the top.
