An institute intended to link students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
with industry, medical and academic researchers and economic development
agencies has opened on the campus, the university said Monday.
The Institute for Industrial Innovation will connect graduate and undergrads at
UWM to real-life experience, said Michael Lovell, dean of the College of
Engineering & Applied Science.
"The institute is the point of entry on campus for any kind of partnership
industry is looking for, from student projects to rapid prototyping," Lovell
said. "It's a way to help us be responsive to their needs."
The goals of the Institute for Industrial Innovation are threefold, Lovell said:
to dramatically increase the college's research links with business and
industry; to give students a role in real-world applications of engineering
using state-of-the-art technology as part of the curriculum; and to foster
economic growth and development in southeastern Wisconsin through technology
transfer and industry assistance.
The college has invested in new rapid prototyping, rapid manufacturing and
computer-aided engineering equipment that offers businesses the ability to
investigate projects without committing a lot of company resources, said Mike
Krauski, director of corporate relations for the College of Engineering &
Applied Science.
Such collaborative efforts expand links with other institutions, such as the
Medical College of Wisconsin, and create potential for more federal funding, UWM
said.
