Bright Idea for Delano

The city has
placed three stop signs that flash bright red, LED lights near busy school
intersections. Public Works officials said Wednesday that the Delano Union
School District bought those flashing signs to make sure drivers see them from a
distance and through the fog.
Director of Public Works John Alderson said these signs are typically placed at
intersections that have a history of high-speed traffic accidents. Public works
have also installed several motion-sensored, light-up crosswalks. Alderson said
the lights are solar-powered and supply enough energy to keep them running even
through cloudy weather. Alderson said the solar powered stop signs have only
been in place for less than one year, so the city will have to wait and see if
they do reduce the number of accidents and stop sign violations. He said the
city will place more in the future. (turnto23.com)
