WISDOT installation first in country
Press Release
May 4, 2008
WISDOT installation is the first in the country with a
unique Non Intrusive Speed Incident Prevention System.
TAPCO
recently assisted the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in designing and
installing a unique Non-Intrusive Traffic Control System with equipment that
determines the type and speed of individual vehicles to help prevent rollovers
at a particularly dangerous stretch of highway in the Milwaukee area. Rather
than the more typical system which incorporates in-pavement loop vehicle
detectors, this new TAPCO system utilizes a combination of three technologies,
microwaves, Ultra Sonic and Infra Red detection which eliminates the need for
in-pavement installation. This non-intrusive detection system greatly reduces
long term maintenance costs as any in-pavement equipment install will, in time
need to be replaced.
The other unique feature that a microwave detection system has to offer is that
it can determine the type of vehicle, i.e. motorcycle, car, van/pickup, bus,
truck, semi-trailer or truck with a trailer. This is very important due to the
fact that the bigger the vehicle the more possibility of an over speed rollover.
Lastly, any system that falsely alarms drivers to over speed soon becomes
ignored. This new TAPCO system is designed to greatly eliminate false alarms.
