It is approved in the U.S. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for all construction and maintenance work zone signs and devices, with a distinctive seal pattern that assists work site inspection.

Barricades with stripes which begin at the upper right side and slope downward to the lower left side are to be designated as “right” (R) barricades. Right Barricades are to be placed on the right side of the road and are designed to move traffic to the left. Barricades with stripes which begin at the upper left side and slope downward to the lower right side are to be designated as “left” (L) barricades.Barricades are to be placed on the left side of the road and are designed to move traffic to the right.

Barricade sheeting has alternating 4" or 6" orange and white stripes running diagonally across the sheeting at a 45° angle.
